Frequently Asked Questions
Here are many common questions asked about Gryphon Games and Comics. For your convenience we have broken up questions into interest category menu below. Feel free to get in touch with us:
New comics come out every Wednesday! That being said, the frequency in which a new comic releases depends entirely on the series. Some are weekly, biweekly, monthly or quarterly. Check with our staff to find out how often your series will be released.
For both our Fort Collins and Cheyenne stores we host a miniature war gaming group called the War Party. Our players meet up weekly to construct and paint models, compare army lists and play games with one another. The War Party organizes special war game leagues, tournaments and club socials. New players are always welcome to visit on war game nights to check out the culture of the groups.
Check our calendars for war gaming nights:
At our Fort Collins store our war gamers primarily play Warhammer 40k, Warhammer, Warmachine and Hordes, Flames of War and Bolt Action. In Cheyenne our war gamers mainly play Warhammer 40k and Warmachine and Hordes. You can learn more about these games on our War Gaming page.
Our Magic spreadsheets are available to use on any computer and are updated in real time. We have spreadsheets for both Standard and Modern cards. It can look a little intimidating but we promise it’s a very simple chart. Here are some quick explanations of each section.
#1 Searching for Cards
If it’s not already up in the upper right corner press Ctrl+F to bring up the Search bar. Simply type in the name of the card you’re looking for and it will be highlighted in the chart. Sometimes you may not know how to spell a card, but the search will still be able to find it if you can spell parts of it correctly.
For example, if you don’t know how to spell “Borborygmos Enraged” (which few people do), simply typing in “enraged” will help narrow down the search and you can click through the options until you find him.
Another example would be if you’re searching for an Eidolon, but can’t remember which one it is you can simply type in “Eidolon” and search through the different ones until you find the one you need. You will see in the image there are 3 cards total that include “Eidolon”
#2 Card Information
Once you’ve found your card, you’ll notice there are columns with information about that card. Here are all the things you’ll be able to find out about the card.
Card Name: Each card is linked to a visual copy of the card so you can make sure it’s the card you’re thinking of.
Color: Pretty self explanatory, this lets you know what color mana is needed for the card. They are sometimes abbreviated as follows Red (R), White (W), Blue (BL), Black (B), Green (G), Uncolored/Colorless (U).
Rarity: Mythic Rare (M), Rare (R), Uncommon (U), Common (C)
Set: Let’s you know what set it’s from. There are 3 sets per Block.
Block: What block it’s from
Retail Price: This is the price we’ll sell it at. We will buy cards from you based on 50% of this price. These fluctuate from time to time, you can read more here: How do you price your Magic cards?
#3 Card Inventory
There are two sections in this area for our Fort Collins and Cheyenne stores. Fort Collins is on the left in purple and Cheyenne is on the right in green. These sections shows you how many of each card we have in stock and if we are currently looking to buy and cards from customers. For both stores our current inventory levels are listed in the yellow shaded areas on the left. Card buying inventory levels are in purple or green directly to the right of the current inventory columns. We buy cards for in store credit/trade at 50% of the retail price.
We base our card prices on the average prices from Star City Games as well as the supply demands from the local community. Card prices will fluctuate for reasons like a new set release or when cards are (un)banned from a format.
We’re usually able to easily order products for you at no extra cost if we don’t have it in stock. This does depends on if the product is available through our designated distributors. Feel free to ask our staff to look up an item’s availability for you when you’re in the store or by phone at (970) 224-3599 for our Fort Collins store and (307) 638-2424 for our Cheyenne store.
There are several types of paints that will help give your model a rich, multi-dimensional look. We highly recommend you use a primer spray beforehand on your models to help hold the paint well.
Types of paints:
Base: gives solid coverage over your primed model establishing an overall undertone for your mini.
Layer: slightly more transparent color that allow you to build up vibrancy and add natural highlights
Shade: very watery paints designed to pool in the crevices of your model to add shadows and dimension
Glaze: similar to a wash, they can be applied over large areas of your model but provide a stronger, colored tint to the area either creating a complimentary vibrancy or a new, contrasting color
Dry: as the name suggests these are very thick paints with little viscosity primarily used to highlight the edges of a model or accent fine details
Texture: natural colored and thicker paints primarily used to create subtle texture for the terrain bases of your model
Technical: each technical paint has a completely different effect including cracked earth, dripping blood and metal oxidization so we recommend asking a staff member to specifically explain all the different effects in store.
Join us at the Fort Collins store on Wednesdays for Hobby Night starting at 6. Fellow painters and gamers are happy to exchange tips and tricks on how to construct and paint various miniatures.
For passionate painters, we recommend you check out Games Workshop’s weekly magazine White Dwarf, which features a section that goes step-by-step through painting different effects on models.
If you’re just playing in our Pokemon League then no. If you’re playing in our Pokemon Tournament from 2-4pm then yes it costs $5 to cover prize support.
If you do not already have Pokemon cards or a legal deck to play with, we do have products for sale as well.
We aim to keep Gryphon’s a family environment suitable for all ages. A majority of our Pokemon League players are between the ages of 8-16, but there is always a range beyond that since Pokemon is a global phenomenon. In addition to our staff members, we have a Pokemon Gym leader who oversees the event the entire day so your child will always be around a supervisor as long as they are in our store or game room.
If you have any reservations about your child coming to an event we are more than happy to have you come visit and hang out in the game room for as long as you’d like. Parents are always welcome to stay with their children or drop them off for the event duration. Please do not hesitate to ask us any further questions.
Our cards are priced by rarity and there is no extra charge for foils.

Usually yes. Depending on the set and if we have enough allocated for both store sales and tournament prize support, we will usually allow box sales. If you would like to order a booster box (including foreign version) from an upcoming set please let us know about a month in advance so we can order enough for you and set it aside.
Once a set has gone out of print it’s highly unlikely we will sell it outright to customers since we typically discount boxes to be $110 out the door.
Certainly! We do ask that you come in about 30 minutes before the tournament starts to trade in your cards (especially if you have a lot) because we frequently have a rush of people about 10-15 minutes before events start. The earlier you come the quicker we can do trades and get you into the tournament without creating a huge line. Trades are applicable for all tournaments and we highly recommend you check our buy lists located on the Magic page before trading.
Yes, we have two main spreadsheets on our site you can use to view which high value cards we’re seeking and how much we will buy them for.
View the Magic page and then choose either the Standard or Modern buy list to view the high value cards. The Standard list includes cards for both Fort Collins (in purple) and Cheyenne (in green) stores. The Modern list is currently only for Fort Collins.
The quantities are shown in real time.
Absolutely! We use a 3rd party system called Comixology that allows you to easily pull single issues of upcoming comic titles or subscribe to on-going series.
Please visit our How to Sign Up on Comixology page for step by step instructions.
WARNING: this will NOT pull comics that have already been released or older comic issues. Please refer to Can you order me an older comic?
Short answer is it depends. The availability of prints is entirely dependent on our distributor, Diamond Comics, and the publishers of the comics. There are numerous factors such as the popularity of the title and if the publishers decided to make multiple prints. We are always happy to order a comic if it’s still available for you at no extra charge. Please ask our staff at the counter to help find the comic you’re looking for!
Absolutely! We are delighted to offer a Board Game Rental System to help you find games you’ll enjoy. Ask our staff about which games we think you might like.
- Rental fees are about 10% of the game retail cost. Fees generally range between $1-$5.
- Games can be rented for 3 nights at a time.
- Each time you rent a game the rental fee goes towards a purchase of a new copy of the game.
Unfortunately not. We have a very high demand for Magic cards and it’s easier to monitor our inventory without reservations.

Yes, as long as there is an authorized person with a key to lock up by the end of the night. Most nights of the week we have designated game leaders running events until various hours of the night with keys. Feel free to ask our staff or groups how late they will be in the back room for open play.
